 BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1978 in Newry, Northern Ireland, Ciaran Magill studied Fashion at Ravensbourne College of Design & Communication in London before returning to the Belfast School of Art & Design in 2006 to complete a BA (Hons) degree in Fine and Applied Arts. His paintings and drawings are held in many private, public and corporate collections, most notably DIAGEO, the world's leading premium drinks business. He was also the recipient of the 2009 DIAGEO Northern Ireland emerging artist award. Magill has won 5 awards from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and from the Freelands Foundation in London.

Magill's psychological landscapes explore isolation, eeriness and a strong sense of foreboding. His conceptual figurative works focus on issues of gender and sexuality.

He has held 15 solo exhibitions in Northern Ireland at many of the leading public art galleries, notably at the Flowerfield Arts Centre (Portstewart), Oriel Gallery (Antrim), Sean Hollywood Arts Centre (Newry), Waterfront Hall (Belfast), Island Arts Centre (Lisburn), Down Arts Centre (Downpatrick), Bangor Library and Ards Arts Centre.

Magill has also exhibited in many group shows all around the world. Recent international exhibitions include Beijing, Shanghai, New York, Berlin and Genoa. In Northern Ireland he has shown in many group shows at the Ormeau Baths Gallery, Golden Thread Gallery, Catalyst Arts, ArtTank and Naughton Gallery at Queen's University Belfast.

NATURE'S GLOW. Open May 4th to May 28th, 2022 at Ards Arts Centre.

Ciaran Magill’s latest solo exhibition explores rural landscapes before and after storms, from daylight through to twilight. Eerie scenes mingle with gentle romantic depictions, often creating a mystical quality. The gallery visitor will find dreamscapes of hazy mountains and alluring forests. Magill invites the viewer to imagine wandering through these magical places as they view the works. The paintings are rich in colour, texture and the use of line, offering a feast for the senses and hopefully offering inspiration to school groups and students as well as the wider art-loving public. The exhibition is curated by Ciaran’s lifelong friend Brendan Jamison who has shown his work all around the world. MARSHALL M. FREDERICKS

SCULPTURE MUSEUM, MICHIGAN

From December 1-15, a new drawing on paper by Ciaran Magill is on display at a fundraising exhibition at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum, Michigan, USA. He is joined by three other leading artists from Northern Ireland - Gail Ritchie, Mark Revels and Brendan Jamison.

Magill's sketch of a kneeling Soviet soldier is based on a statue at a war memorial in Berlin’s Treptower Park. The swirling lines energise the figure and transforms the rigid pose, giving the soldier a beautiful aura, akin to an angel with halo and wings. To view the exhibition webpage please CLICK HERE

AN EXTRAORDINARY NEW DAY (2016) Ciaran Magill, oil on linen, 120 x 150 cm

Something a little odd...

A new solo exhibition by Ciaran Magill at Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry, Northern Ireland

Wednesday 1st June to Thursday 28th July 2016

This is the most experimental, raw and challenging solo exhibition of Ciaran Magill's career. Never afraid to take risks and push the boundaries of his art practice, this latest show presents Magill's fascination with a feeling of oddness when he wanders through the countryside alone. This haunting state of mind is the catalyst for his unique style of painting, combining spooky sensations with an hypnotic charm. Magill's magical dreamscapes reflect his love of exuberant colour and dynamic composition. Meanwhile, his masterful use of line creates a wonderful sense of tension, as if lakes, trees, rocks and figures are gently advancing, receding or dissolving before the eyes...

Location: Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, 1A Bank Parade, Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland, BT35 6HP. Telephone: 00442830313180

Opening hours: 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

This collection of works has been created over the past 5 years and is curated by Magill's art dealer and life-time friend, Brendan Jamison.

Location: Flowerfield Arts Centre, 185 Coleraine Road, Portstewart, BT55 7HU, Northern Ireland.

ART REVIEW: Warning! This is Contemporary Art

By Tammy Moore

The provocative exhibition isn't for the faint of heart, but is well-worth challenging your preconceptions

Admittance to Warning! This is Contemporary Art at the Crescent Art Centre is ‘strictly limited to over 18s only’. Determined to avoid ‘safe’ art, the Warning Art curator Brendan Jamison has collected works dealing with sexuality, gender and mortality from controversial national and international artists.

So, should visitors to the newly opened exhibition, which takes over the space on the second floor where the Dickon Hall Gallery was situated, prepare to be shocked? Well, maybe. There are certainly a few sets of genitalia on display – male, female and in transition – in the three brightly lit, white walled rooms of the gallery but it would be a stretch to describe this bold exhibition as salacious or particularly titillating. The imagery and concepts range from the provocative to the tender, but none of it seems designed to arouse.

In fact, a few of the pieces are likely to have the opposite effect. ‘The Sperm Harvesters’ in the second room is a pencil and paper drawing by Lydia Holmes that depicts penes sprouting from a desert landscape, with miniature women climbing on and lassoing them.

The drawing was inspired by stories of the Zimbabwean ‘Sugar Mamas’, who kidnap and sexually assault men in order to steal semen for unknown uses (theories range from ritual magic to face cream). Despite the dark theme, the piece itself is bizarrely cheerful, with one little woman waving her arms triumphantly from atop the glans.

Other pieces on display take a more positive approach to sexuality. Ciaran Magill’s nudes are beautiful and approachable, with his portrait of a transsexual caught on the liminal edge of gender identity. There is something tender in the painting of two male nudes in a room. The soft greys and yellow undertones they are drawn in give the captured moment a soft, pre-dawn feel.

Not everything in the Warning Art Gallery is particularly to this critic’s personal tastes. There is nothing in the exhibition that is easy to pass with only a cursory look. Clearly, from the red stickers marking a lot of the art as sold, other visitors to the gallery agree. It seems that Jamison was right about there being a market for edgier works.

Warning! This is Contemporary Art is at the Crescent Art Centre until June 15.

MAY 2020 - IDENTITY EXHIBITION

Ciaran Magill's Dual Realities, oil on canvas, 60 x 80 cm

The Northern Ireland Mental Health Arts Festival [NIMHAF] have selected Ciaran Magill's 'Dual Realites' for this year's exhibition which is running online from 18-24 May 2020. Artists were asked to respond to the question: what does identity mean to you?

Magill's statement: ‘Dual Realties’ is a painting which attempts to capture my identity as someone with chronic bi-polar disorder. While it disturbs me that my condition is so apparent when interacting with the public, on the positive side, it allows for dual perspectives and a heightened sense of creativity and imagination. Painting deeply enriches my life, providing a solid grounding and focus through turbulent periods. Hopefully my art practice can eclipse my mental health challenges to the point that my strongest identity will be that of an artist, exploring the world outside (in society) and the world inside (the mind), attempting to capture its beauty and mystery, through line and colour, embracing and celebrating all the wonders of life.
